Dublin Ladies U14 Ladies – Finish Great Campaign
July 3, 2016
A long campaign for the Dublin Ladies U14 Girls concluded when the team played in the Basketball Scotland FIBA International SummerSlam tournament in Stirling on the weekend of June 17th to 19th. The squad coached by Ken Maloney and Louise, started with six Liffey Celtics representatives, Ciara Mulleady, Laura Browne, Karyl Martyr, Kate Rochford, Fatimah Akorkde and Chi Chi, in the initial squad of 24. A long international campaign and a lot of work from team and coaching staff, saw the team compete in the Basquet tournament in Cambrils, Spain at the end of March, the SheHoops in Belfast on May 24th/25th and the Scotland SummerSlam in June. Some excellent performances from the team and the Liffey Celtics contingent. Karyl’s and Laura’s involvement was somewhat impacted by injury and availability. Ciara, Laura, Fatimah and Kate were selected in the final panel of 12 to play in the SheHoops and SummerSlam tournaments.
The Dublin team won the SheHoops tournament in Belfast. Well done to Ciara Mulleady who was selected as an All Star for the SheHoops tournament.
The Scotland Basketball SummerSlam is hopefully the first of many FIBA tournaments for these girls. This year it is a three team tournament versus BNI and Scotland. The team opened with a good win over BNI on the Friday, and followed that up with victories over Scotland and BNI on the Saturday. The final versus Scotland was a closely fought affair with Dublin girls playing impressively to win the SummerSlam tournament. Fatimah played superbly throughout the weekend and was awarded the overall tournament MVP.
