AICC – Great Weekend for U14’s and U16’s
April 16, 2015
Well done to Celtic’s U14 and U16 teams who did us all proud with great performances in Cork and Galway last weekend. Liffey Celtics U14 Girls and Boys made their way to Cork on Friday evening to take part in their first ever competition at this level.
The U14 girls were located in the Parochial Hall, and despite carrying a few injuries, they played really well to take closely fought victories over Maree and Portlaoise. Also on the Saturday they lost out to Fr. Matthews and St. Mary, before going down to Dublin rivals Meteors on Sunday. A great team effort from the girls to take the sixth place position.
The U14 Boys were based just up the road in Neptune, and played their hearts out to secure a 4th place position. On the Saturday they were victorious in their first two pool games against St. Marys and Letterkenny before losing to Moycullen. The boys needed to beat Ballincollig by 8 points to progress to the semi finals and put in a fine performance to take the game by 10. On the Sunday the Celtics boys played through injuries but lost to an excellent Belfast Star team, and in the third place play-off, KUBS took victory in a closely fought game.
The U16 girls were based in Oranmore, Galway and played in a very competitive group with very little between any of the teams. Celtics took narrow victories over Fr. Matthews and St. Josephs, before going down to a determined home side, Maree. Next up was Portlaoise, with both sides contributing to a really competitive game and the Celtics girls took it by four points in the final minutes. In the semi-final on the Sunday morning, Glanmire gave an excellent shooting display in the first half to proceed to the final. Liffey Celtics girls secured a third place victory over DCU Mercy in a close game.
Well done to all our players, and their coaches and managers who looked after them so well over the weekend. As always they got great support from their families.
Thanks to all our reporters and tweeters at each of the venues, who kept us all up to date. Thanks also to Cork and Galway Area boards who ran a great tournament and looked after everybody very well, and congratulations to each of the AICC champions – Glanmire, St. Marys and Moycullen.
